230309 Introduction to Applied Linguistics (S) (SoSe 2005)

Applied Linguistics is an essential component of university level language study, bridging the field of practical use of language in authentic and didactic contexts on the one hand with the scientific study of language form and function, including conversational language, scientific language, literary language, the role of language in the electronic media, sign language, and problems of language pathology.

The content of the course includes the following topics:

• The study of the different branches of linguistics (i.e. text technology, computational linguistics, clinical linguistics, EFL) taught at Bielefeld University as well as translating and interpreting, and machine translation
• Principles of first and second Language learning: phases, interference, interlanguage, bilingualism
• Principles of language teaching: language and media, dialogue interaction in classroom English
• Error analysis, contrastive analysis, teaching materials (grammatography, lexicography)
• Language testing and experimenting with language

Credit
The students are expected to do the reading assignment and participate actively in class. Credit for this class can be gained on the basis of regular attendance, in-class project work, and a final written exam.
