Die politische Regulierung von Technik stößt in der funktional differenzierten Gesellschaft an Grenzen. Dieses empirische Problem wird häufig theoretisch als "Politikversagen" diagnostiziert und mit der Forderung nach einer "Demokratisierung der Expertise" gewissermaßen durch Entdifferenzierungsangebote zu lösen versucht, z.B. in dem Laien in technisch-komplexe Regulierungsverfahren involviert oder Experten öffentlich rechenschaftspflichtig gemacht werden. Die Veranstaltung zeichnet diese Problemlage zunächst (wissenschafts- und technik-)soziologisch nach, um in einem zweiten Schritt die demokratietheoretischen Ansätze zu diskutieren, welche den erwähnten Lösungsvorschlägen zugrunde liegen. An empirischen Beispielen werden sodann die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Demokratisierung von Wissenschaft und Technik erörtert.
