In this seminar we will first take a look at some of sociology's most central concepts and their various definitions and then move on to different theoretical approaches to modern societies different subsystems.
First we will deal with concepts such as action, interaction, and exchange, then move on to norms, roles, and institutions and also tackle questions of conflict and deviance and manifest and latent functions. In the second half of this set of lectures we will then take a look at modern societies different subsystems, while at the same time introducing students to different sociological accounts of these fields: we take a rational-choice tack on social capital and the evolution of money, a systems theory perspective on romantic love, a praxis and field theory view on modern art, and a foucauldian discourse focus on the vagaries of individualism.
hopefully this set of lectures will be delivered both life and via zoom
