The manners and ways we express ourselves in are fairly complex behaviours, and they say much more about us than we think. We constantly make conscious or subconscious choices in how we communicate, express ourselves, or sound. Our identities manifest themselves in our linguistic products.
In this class, we will investigate the complex correlations between language and identity. To do so, we will study the use of language as a marker of identity, ethnicity, age group, social class, or gender. Through exploring a number of case studies, we will get a closer look at the links language has with social behaviour, power, politics, and the media. Additionally, we will learn and apply various approaches to study language variation.
