This course aims to explore the nexus of power and violence through a survey of multiple contexts and perspectives. Non-state as well as state actors may be involved in various acts of organized violence to achieve political ends. These may include resort to systemic violence or asymmetric power conflicts among perpetrators and victims of violence, genocide, civil war, guerrilla warfare, insurgency, terrorism, etc. With a focus on organized violence, this course will reflect on major implications of violence. In a similar vein, it will seek to reflect on the phenomenon of political power, the ways in which power operates and relates to violence. While for some political philosophers, power is a limiting, repressing, constraining, and punishing force, for others, it represents a productive and cultivating force, thereby forging society. While for some political thinkers, power is acquired, maintained, lost or reclaimed, for others it is ubiquitous, all-encompassing and embodied, to a degree that it shapes our very perception of reality itself.
