Oscar Wilde was one of the most flamboyant celebrities of his age. He was a proponent of the philosophy of Aestheticism and lived by the motto: 'life imitates art'. Known for his brilliant wit as well as his peacock feathered velvet jacket, he was a controversial figure of English society. Wilde rose to be one of London's most popular playwrights only to fall from social grace in 1895. His scandalous trial for indecency resulted in a two-year imprisonment and hard labour that left him in poor health for the rest of his life. Wilde is not only fascinating because of his life and his wit but also because he worked in many genres, publishing journalism, poetry, fairy tales, plays, a novel and essays. This course wants to look at his versatile work in the light of his colourful personality and its influence on late Victorian society.
