Course aims and learning objectives
Global order increasingly emerges from interrelations among non-state actors. The course tends to understand and analyze the role of non-state actors in world politics and its contribution to global order. As a starting point we focus on international governmental organizations (IOs) that are embedded in and interacting with a societal environment. Even though the state is still an important actor in the environment, it is by far not the only one. The environment encompasses a variety of organizations beyond states, among them IOs, inter- as well as transnational non-governmental organizations (NGOs) but also rather informal, at least less formally institutionalized fora such as the Group of Twenty (G20).
Taking the omnipresence and significance of relations among these actors for granted the course’s core question is how relations between IOs and other non-state actors in their environment can be studied and how inter-organizational relations (IOR) contribute to specific kinds of global order. Besides discussing and evaluating various theoretical approaches the course also intends to study and compare empirical cases of IOR.

Die verbindlichen Modulbeschreibungen enthalten weitere Informationen, auch zu den "Leistungen" und ihren Anforderungen. Sind mehrere "Leistungsformen" möglich, entscheiden die jeweiligen Lehrenden darüber.
Studienleistung:
Students are expected to come to class, study their notes from class, do the *required* readings. Readings (only those marked "required") should be read thoroughly before each class – they will be reinforced through lecture. Students are *NOT* expected to do the "suggested further reading." It is provided for you in case you decide to do further research on a topic in the future. In addition, students (in groups by two or three students) are expected to study (1) a non-state actor in its role in its wider environment and (2) how it contributes to global order. Students must present their findings within a 20 min talk and a short discussion paper (~500 words) that must be uploaded at Lernraum on Fridays before the presentation.
Leistungsnachweis:
Depending on the study and examination regulations a “Modulabschlussprüfung” can be acquired by doing a written essay (~6,000 words). The deadline to submit an essay is September 30, 2017.
