This course looks in detail at our current knowledge of the ionised gas in the
universe. While ionised plasma fills the vast majority of space in our Galaxy,
it is very hard to observe and study, leading to a clear gap in traditional
astronomy text books. Based on a collation of research papers published
throughout the past half century, we will gain an overview of one of the most
fascinating, yet often ignored, parts of the Milky Way.
Topics include:
- The local ISM, including the Local Bubble
- Impact of Supernovae
- Interstellar Scintillation, dynamic spectra and scintillation arcs
- Turbulence in the IISM
- Extreme Scattering Events
- Electron-density models
- H-alpha surveys
- Small-scale H-alpha investigations
- Bubbles and Shells
- High-velocity clouds and interstellar heating
- Magnetic fields in the Galaxy
- Extra-galactic studies of the IISM and magnetic fields
