…Feminists hate men.
…Feminism encourages women to leave their husbands.
…Men can’t be feminists.
…Feminism victimizes women.
…We don’t need feminism anymore.
…Feminists demand female supremacy.
…Feminists want to be treated like men.
These are just some beliefs about feminism found on internet forums and on social media.
The aim of this course is to answer some prevailing questions and dispel misconceptions that circulate widely in everyday discourse about feminism(s), feminist theories and feminist criticisms. While the most basic and most circulated definition of feminism is “the radical notion that women are people” (Marie Shear, 1986), upon closer inspection feminist theories differ widely in their specific viewpoints on women and their role in society. Together we will read seminal feminist texts to map the diverse landscape that is the history of feminist thought. We will academically and critically discuss a variety of different approaches within feminist discourses that differ on topics like sex and sexuality, power, oppression, and politics. Together we will endeavor to find out why feminist theories have become so prominent in academic studies in the humanities, how they connect to literary and cultural studies, gender studies and other disciplines, and will discuss how feminisms are informed by and have informed in return other socio-cultural theories.
