One of the key competences for students in secondary and higher education to acquire is writing (as well as speaking) conforming to certain conventions - or genres. However, how genre knowledge can / should actually be taught remains to be the subject of current debate. Therefore, we will first set out to discuss the concept of genre itself in the light of current text- and medialinguistic research. You will then have the opportunity to conduct and present small genre analyses on both on- and offline, written and spoken genres. In a next step, we will review didactic approaches to teaching genres in order to, in a final step, give you the opportunity of designing and discussing material for an audience of your choice.
