The relationship between global history and gender history was for quite some time a non-relationship. By now, especially historians coming from gender history and turning to global issues have shown how vital gender as a category is to our understanding of global contacts, entanglements, and dissociations. In our seminar, we can trace both historiographical changes and changes in theoretical perspectives, concerning the relevance and dynamics of gendering societies across the globe. Specific emphasis will be given to issues of modern history, but we will also discuss examples from early modern times (in Eurocentric parlance) to assess longer-term shifts. The seminar will combine questions of theory and methods.
Seminar language can be English or German, depending on the participants.
