The linguistic landscape of the United States exhibits diversity on many levels. These include regional, social, and ethnic variation as well as complex scenarios of multilingualism and the sociolinguistic status of non-English languages. In this course, we will have a look at major features of variation in American English and learn to analyse them in linguistic terms. We will also discuss important representatives of non-English languages and their position in the language planning of the U.S. Finally, public attitudes towards non-standard varieties and specialised domains such as slang and computer-mediated language will be discussed according to the interests of the participants.
