Dr. Héctor Cebolla-Boado is an Associate Professor at UNED (Department of Sociology - Social Stratification) in Madrid (Spain). He comes to Bielefeld under International Guest Lectureship Program of Bielefeld University.
Course outline:
The course has a twofold aim.
(a) To start with it seeks to provide participants with detailed insights into the academic literature on the integration processes and outcomes of immigrant youth and immigrant-origin youngsters compared to their native counter-parts. To do so, it invites to scrutinize papers on a large number of dependent variables, reviewing different streams of the literature mostly from sociology, social psychology and social epidemiology.
(b) On the other hand the course complements this theoretical work inviting students to explore and analyze different datasets to apply this knowledge. The idea here is that students build robust and consistent quantitative empirical evidence, as well as discussing the application of different quantitative research techniques.
Topics to be covered:
This is a list of topics the course will cover. For each of them, the students will (1) discuss the theoretical traditions and implications of a selection of articles and (2) design quantitative analyses using different international datasets.
-Early inequalities in child development: from perinatal health to the “healthy immigrant” paradox

-The importance of school effects on cognitive outcomes
-The paradox of “immigrant optimism”: educational expectations
-Non-cognitive aspects of the school experience and the well-being of immigrant children
-Disentangling primary and secondary effects in educational careers
-Migrating for international education
-Labor market returns to education
