Als Beginn postkolonialer Kritik wird in der Forschung das Erscheinen von Edward Saids 'Orientalismus' im Jahr 1978 veranschlagt. Bis heute differenziert sich der postkoloniale Diskurs aus und bemüht sich um eine Revision kolonialer Vergangenheit. Geschichte und Geschichtsschreibung wird dabei als Resultat imperialistischer und kolonialer Vorherrschaften begriffen, die sich unter anderem durch einseitige Perspektiven in kulturellen Darstellungen durchgesetzt hat. Gefordert wird eine kritische Betrachtung und Neuschreibung bzw. die Relativierung einer hegemonialen westlich-imperialistischen Kulturgeschichte. Die sich in den 1980ern und 1990er Jahren formierende postkoloniale Theorie beeinflusst nicht nur die Literaturgeschichtsschreibung oder Kanonisierung von Texten, sondern spiegelt sich auch in konkreten Schreibweisen um 2000 wieder. Das Seminar beleuchtet diese Dynamiken anhand einschlägiger Theorien und literarischer Texte und gibt einen Einblick in gegenwärtige Entwicklungen postkolonialer Literatur.
Die regelmäßige und aktive Teilnahme am Seminar wird erwartet. Dazu gehört Anwesenheit, Vor- und Nachbereitung durch entsprechende Lektüre, sowie Mitarbeit im Seminar. Die Studienleistung wird durch zwei Schreibaufgaben absolviert, die im Laufe des Semesters bearbeitet werden. Die Prüfungsleistung wird durch die mündliche Modulabschlussprüfung abgelegt.
