In this course we will address different aspects of migration in the Latin American context. We will see how contemporary migration patterns were shaped in the course of history, for instance in the context of migration from Mexico to the US or from Ecuador to Spain. We will also address the relationship between shifts in migration patterns in the context of global, regional and national economic and politicial developments. Examples are the mobility of Latin American migrants in the EU (leaving Spain after the crisis) as well as the changing patterns of migration between Colombia and Venezuela.
This seminar will be taught completely in English. Students should be willing to prepare the classes by reading the indicated literature and to actively participate in the discussions during the sessions.
