This block seminar provides an introduction to the field of ‘linguistic landscaping‘ (LL), i.e. a versatile approach to how and why languages and text(s) are embedded in visual public spaces, for example on street and shop signs, advertising panels, official buildings as well as on signposts, and many more. As LL is closely linked to urban semiotics, we will explore not only the forms, but, in particular, also the meanings and functions of signs in urban spaces. Focussing on different linguistic varieties around the world and their contexts, we will also discuss the sociolinguistic factors influencing the choice of signs and the dominant language policies in the context of migration. Apart from learning about major theoretical considerations in LL research, we will do hands-on investigations into local cityscapes ourselves, thus describing, analysing and interpreting self-chosen examples from public spaces we are interested in.
Further details are provided in the preparatory meeting on 17 January 2023, 16-17.
