In this study group we are going to consider – often critical - representations of the USA in pop and rap culture, analysing songs like Childish Gambino’s “This is America”, Tupac Shakur’s “Changes” and more. These songs will be examined with respect to tropes and discourses like the American Dream, racism, US gun policy etc. The study group will also address sub-topics like the American healthcare system and demonstrations against racism. Besides this content, there will be a creative block where we are going to both create a utopian/dystopian depiction of the USA and write poems/songs focussing on social and cultural issues. (Do not worry, nobody will have to sing anything in this seminar.)
Participants will be required to create a presentation either in groups or alone (depending on the number of the participants) on one of the topics discussed during the seminar (We will talk about this in the first session). Everybody will be expected to take part actively, since this a project created by the whole group.
