This class deals with psychological disorders prevalent in Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URM), diagnostic tools and treatment options, including psychotherapy concepts but also short-term and low-threshold care concepts. Moreover ways in which developmental aspects might be influenced by fleeing one’s home country and aspects of culturally and linguistically-sensitive care concepts will be discussed. Students are supposed to develop understanding for the specific needs of URMs, increase their intercultural awareness and get an overview of how to screen, diagnose and treat children and adolescents in need. We might have a guest in one session who will talk about his experiences regarding arriving in a new culture and society as an adolescent.
Master students (Psychology) can attend the class. Basic skills in cinical psychology are expected. Classes will be held in English to increase awareness for working with clients who are non-native German speakers. No advanced English skills are required and school English is sufficient.
