Studying race and racism can be a challenging endeavour which is, however, immensely rewarding as it allows us to scrutinise some of the most important socio-political issues and conflicts today. We will begin by attending in depth to the question of how to talk about race: what is politically (in)correct and/or politically expedient? Reni Eddo-Lodge’s Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People about Race (2017) as well as excerpts from further contemporary non-fiction by Tupoka Ogette, Afua Hirsch and David Olusoga will set the ground for this debate and our seminar discussions. Based on the premise that ideas of race are subject to historical change, we will study issues like race, racism and migration in their culturally specific contexts. Beginning with literary representations of the British Empire, we will analyse James Thomson’s ode “Rule, Britannia” (1740) and Joseph Conrad’s short story “An Outpost of Progress” (1898). Turning to contemporary Britain and the legacies of colonialism, we will discuss Carol Ann Duffy’s poem “Foreign” (1987) and Benjamin Zephaniah’s “The British” before concluding the seminar with Girl, Woman, Other (2019) by Bernadine Evaristo, the first black woman ever to win The Booker Prize.
