Algorithms, indicators, benchmarks, various metrics and other kinds of quantitative measures nowadays constitute a common feature of both private and public spheres. Whether we talk about the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic, compare countries regarding how climate (un)friendly their policies are, businesses regarding their respective performances in the market, discuss our own health and wellbeing, or try to decide which product to buy, chances are that these situations will be informed, if not thoroughly shaped, by—numbers.
As evidenced by mounting research, the increasing demand for quantification and the resultant proliferation of different kinds of numbers have had a profound effect on national policies, corporate agendas, global governance, as well as on a growing number of specific domains, from finances and politics, to education and healthcare.
During the seminar we will dive deeper into the phenomenon, critically examine its origins and implications, and discuss some of the key sociological works on the subject.
The syllabus, including the literature, will be available in the course Lernraum during the first week of the semester. The language of the seminar is English.
