The First World War is considered a caesura in British history and has left a lasting impact on British national identity/-ies and practices of remembrance. In this seminar, we will do close-readings of several pieces of literature that deal with the Great War, the trauma it inflicted, and the ways in which poets and playwrights reflected upon and criticized the war effort.
We will read "Oh, What a Lovely War" by Joanne Littlewood and the Theatre Workshop, as well as "Journey's End" by R.C.Sherriff. Please buy or borrow a copy of these plays before the start of the semester.
Poetry will be made available via the "Lernraum".
