Outlander, Bridgerton, Fifty Shades of Grey, Twilight, Virgin River - the list of bestselling romance fictions seems endless these days. Both the original novels and the adaptations for the screen attract huge numbers of audiences and generate die-hard fans. There is much money to be made by selling fantasies of true love to romantic-deprived people and the romance literary market is thriving. The genre is therefore often considered rather cheap and low-brow, an easy read. While that is certainly true for a sizeable number of romance literature, it would be shortsighted to define the whole genre as simplistic and run-of-the-mill. Romance literature has a long history that has produced several well-known literary tropes, and it has given us novels that today are counted as literary masterpieces.
In this class, we will seek to expand our knowledge of narrative as a literary genre and pay attention to the history of romance literature, its features and structures. With these foundations, we will then study a selection of contemporary US-American hit romances and critically discuss those.
