Westside, East Coast and Thug Life - rap music has emerged as a powerful form of expression which to this day gives voice to social issues, urban life and personal narratives. From its humble beginnings with little recognition, rap has grown to become a global phenomenon, influencing socio-political climates, culture and much more.
This course explores the development of rap music in the U.S. and its enormous impact on rap culture, music and society. We will focus particularly on the emergence of gangsta rap in California in the late 1980s, examining music, lyrics and images, as well as controversies and challenges and the genre’s approaches to social issues and its role in defining the landscape of hip hop music. By connecting early gangsta rap with today's rap music, we will explore how its influence continues to shape the genre and its narratives, sounds and movements of contemporary hip-hop culture.
As this is a 'Studiengruppe' and involves only students, all participants will be actively involved at all levels, for example in choosing material, preparing short talks or leading discussions, presenting analyses of specific material, deciding how to structure the sessions, etc.
