The course provides a comprehensive exploration of international children's rights, immersing participants in the fundamental principles and legal frameworks that safeguard the welfare of children globally. Beginning with an introduction to International Children’s Rights, the course delves into the intersection between children and international human rights law, examining the evolving legal frameworks that have shaped international child law over the years.
A focal point of the course is the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and its general principles, offering a detailed guide to understanding the core tenets of children's rights. Participants will have the chance to explore various rights enshrined within the CRC, including the right to life, education, health, and juvenile justice, with special emphasis on the unique challenges faced by refugee and asylum-seeking children. The course also analyses the key roles played by UNICEF and other international actors and organisations dedicated to protecting and promoting children’s rights worldwide. Moreover, participants will engage deeply with the practical application of children’s rights, studying standards and mechanisms that ensure the effective implementation and enforcement of these rights in diverse contexts.
