The current Venezuelan displacement phenomenon is, with over 7 million people, one of the largest forced migration phenomena globally. Latin America and the Caribbean have received approximately 6 million migrants and refugees from Venezuela in less than seven years. Although forced migration in the region is not new, and Latin America has some progressive migration and refugee conventions and agreements (e.g., The Cartagena Declaration), the Venezuelan human mobility phenomenon has brought into question receiving states' institutional, legal, financial, and social capacities to respond and offer these people better living conditions. Moreover, the covid-19 pandemic worsened the situation and increased the challenges for displaced people and states in the region.
The seminar will discuss the contemporary history of forced displacement in the region, analyze the use of different categories to "label" people on the move, and discuss the responses and challenges Venezuelan forced displacement has caused. Finally, we will draw some parallels and differences with forced displacement phenomena occurring in other regions worldwide.
