What are the methodological implications for and of scholars studying the religious lives of refugees? And how should scholars engage with the historical erasure and “methodological nationalism” in past scholarship on refugee religions? This course will raise and address research issues from ethics to reflexive positionality and theorizing that centers refugees and their “lived religions.” We will explore these questions by drawing on primary materials and scholarship across comparative sites and periods. Participants are encouraged to mine their empirical data to work through questions of methodological concern.
