In the twentieth century, consumer culture offered American males numerous opportunities for self-making, re-making and success in the job or dating market. At the same time, it contributed to a perceived masculinity crisis. This course focuses on the representation of masculinities and consumer culture in US-American media, and in particular works such as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby (1925), David Ely’s novel Seconds (1963) with its film adaptation by John Frankenheimer (1966), Bret Easton Ellis’s novel American Psycho (1991), and its film adaptation by Mary Harron (2000).
