When thinking about English, most people focus on Standard British and Standard American English although there are numerous varieties all around the globe. In this course we will get to know some of the Southeast Asian varieties of English (eg. Indian English, Sri Lankan English, Hong Kong English and Singapore English). We will not only focus on the linguistic features but also talk about the sociohistorical context with a focus on postcolonialism. Postcolonial countries often struggle to find an adequate strategy on how to deal with English after decolonization. While English functions as a divider in some countries, it unifies in others. Thus, we will also look closer on language planning, particularly language acquisition. Your Studienleistung will be a short but interesting presentation about a variety of your choice (out of the varieties I suggest ;), as well as a brief peer review.
