Our guest lecturer Mrs Magali Alloatti is a researcher at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, UFSC, Florianopolis, Brasilien.
This seminar seeks to examine the importance of gender, race and ethnicity in the migration of Latin Americans. Our analysis will be restricted to the topic of ethnic economy. We will work in two levels. We will delve into some theoretical discussions about how gender, race and ethnicity can contribute to the analysis of ethnic economy. Simultaneously, we will discuss multiple empirical cases of Latin American migrants, considering long-established flows and new trends of migration. Among the topics of the course, we will include: a) ethnic economy and ethnic enclaves; b) changes and negotiation of gender ideologies and tensions between the private and public sphere; c) determinants of self-employment and hiring of co-ethnics; d) differences and disputes around identities regarding race and ethnicity. Our objective is to develop an intersectional approach, reflecting and questioning some established trends in the current literature.
