Second generation immigrants normally refer to children born to immigrants at the destination area. This course focuses on the lives of children of African immigrants in Germany, with an emphasis on Ghanaians. Ways in which the second generations, also ‘Afro-Germans’ or ‘Afro-Deutsch’ navigate through the ‘two worlds’ they live in in their everyday lives will be discussed throughout the course. Topics such as the following will be highlighted;
1. Formation of personal and collective identities (this is a topical issue second generations grapple with) as well as issues related to family upbringing.
2. Integration into the host society (education, labour market, careers, etc.).
3. Transnational activities and engaging with their parents’ countries of origin through the arts- music, clothing, and dress etc.
The course aims at offering a critical reflection on the second generations. It incorporates scholarship in the field, theoretical considerations, and everyday experiences.
