This class works in tandem with Lotta König’s “Teaching Drama”. We recommend that you take both seminars for the full experience.
In “Reading Drama”, we are going to explore the textual foundations of theatre from a literary perspective to familiarize ourselves with the ways in which dramatic texts function, which conventions are at play in modern theatre plays, how these conventions are broken to generate new experiences, and how dramatic texts are adapted for the stage (and screen). This seminar is meant to give students – especially those who want to become teachers – the chance to practice and become experts in handling the analytical toolkits necessary to engage in textual analysis and interpretation of theatre plays.
We are going to read two plays, one of which is the newly written chamber opera At Your Doorstep (music composed by Mathhew MacFarlane and Marc L. Vogler, written by Robert Lehmeier in cooperation with youth groups in Bielefeld and Johannesburg, South Africa). The libretto will be made available to students for discussion.
Please note that the seminar will begin early:
22nd of March, 10:15-11:45am; mandatory Zoom meeting, introduction to the tandem course concept with Lotta König, registration for tour/workshop/performance.
29th of March 2023, 4-6pm; Introduction to “Reading Drama”; preparatory session at Bielefeld University.
30th of March 2023, 8:30-12:30am; guided tour through the Stadttheater (~ 60 mins, €3 per attendee) + theatre workshop (~ 90 mins, €3 per attendee).
5th of April 2023, 8.30-10am; preparation for the performance of At Your Doorstep (together with Lotta König and her class “Teaching Drama”).
5th of April 2023, 11am-2pm; At Your Doorstep (performance at Rudolph-Oetker-Halle, €8 per ticket) + Q&A with Johannesburg audience and theatre ensemble.
Total: €14 per person for the guided tour, workshop and for a ticket to the play. (If you are interested in the seminar but feel that the cost is keeping you from attending, please contact us in advance).
