This seminar is a basic introduction to transnational migration and aims to explore its significance for understanding global migration in the 21st century. As a new perspective that gained popularity in the early 1990s, transnational migration describes “the processes by which immigrants forge and sustain multi-stranded social relations that link together their societies of origin and settlement.“ (Basch et al 1994: 7) It is a perspective that challenges not only how we think about migration and migrants’ life worlds in-between “here” and “there”, but also how we conceive of national societies as social spaces by questioning the pervasive notion of a congruency between the nation-state and society. This brings with it methodological challenges for students and researchers.
Once we have studied the foundations of this perspective, we will look at how transnational migration affects different spheres of life in(-between) both receiving societies and sending societies. Highlighting the role of migrant agency, we explore political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of transnational migration through selected case studies.
The language of the classes and your assignments is English. The seminar lives from your active participation. Regular contributions to the discussion are expected.
