David Mamet (*1947) is a contemporary US-American playwright, scriptwriter and film director, who won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1984, and numerous Tony nominations. Mamet’s plays cover a variety of topics such as capitalism, the American Dream, the battle between the sexes, sexual harassment, betrayal and isolation. However, two essential aspects of his plays, which are known for their “Mametspeak,” are power and language as the characters constantly use language in order to establish power. Amongst others due to the aggressive forms of masculinity in his plays, Mamet has been accused of being misogynistic. This course explores three selected plays, namely: American Buffalo (1975), Glengarry Glen Ross (1983), Oleanna (1992), and their film adaptations.
