This intensive lecture course introduces students to major epochs of U.S. American literary history. Literature will be placed in historical and cultural contexts. Individual text interpretation functions to illustrate major literary, artistic, social and theoretical developments from transcendentalism to postmodernism. Key concepts, major literary developments, and a selection of important authors are at the center of attention. Class requirements are active participation including journal entries for each primary text and a final exam ( graded for old BA students). All registered students will receive an email about the reading assignments to be completed before the intensive course starts.
