Depending on the situation in the fall, number of participants and your own preferences, parts of this class may take place on-site at the university! (more details to follow soon)
When we talk about “American English”, we often think of General American English only, the term that is used to describe the accent (mostly) free of any local or ethnic markers. But in reality, American English is a whole set of varieties that are spoken in North America. In this class, we will focus on the different varieties of English that are spoken throughout the United States. Not only will we look at regional differences (e.g. Southern American English), but also at other dialectal variation like ethnicity and class (e.g. AAVE, Chicano English…). You are going to learn how to understand and describe these varieties in terms of phonology, grammar and lexis.
This is a linguistics class, so you should be more or less familiar with linguistic concepts and terminology. Preferably, you have already taken both Intro to Linguistics classes from BM3 (or another introductory linguistics course).
