In this student-led study group, we are going to address questions such as: How is the US population represented in American children’s picture books? Why deal with multicultural children’s literature in the German primary English classroom? What makes a good multicultural children’s book?
We will consider Critical Race Theory (Tyson) and Stuart Hall’s notion of Representation to help us develop a theoretical framework for our work in the Study Group. As a group, we will develop our own criteria for assessing what makes a good multicultural children’s picture book and apply these criteria to selected picture books to decide if they would be suitable for classroom use. Your own proposals and ideas will be a vital part of the Study Group and will fill out the plan already outlined and augment the primary and secondary materials which we will take as our starting point.
