This class is an introduction to African American Vernacular English (AAVE), which is one of the many terms used to describe the type of English spoken by many Black Americans throughout the United States. While one part of the class is meant to offer a detailed look at the linguistic features of this language on all levels of linguistic description, in a second part we will focus on using and creating our own digital learning material on aspects of the language. You will learn how to use the software H5P to create interactive content with authentic speech material. We will also explore historical, sociological, political, cultural and educational issues connected with AAVE and investigate its present use in, for example, literature, music, and the media.
This is a linguistics class, so you should be more or less familiar with linguistic concepts and terminology. Preferably, you have already taken both Intro to Linguistics classes from BM3 (or another introductory linguistics course).
