Folk songs, which we will define in anthropological terms to begin with, are a fertile field for investigation as texts, as stories, as socio-historical documents, as instances of political debate and as attempts at effecting social change. In this module, we will be exploring a body of material dating back to the mid-18th century from the British Isles, North America and to a lesser extent Australia in terms of cultural studies, textual analysis, story-telling, stylistics, critical discourse, performance and identity definition. In the context of high school teaching, we may further look into ways in which teachers and language learners can work with these songs and there will also be opportunities for creative writing given the relevance of much of the material by bringing the material up to date for our times.
