In this class, we will discuss the different dimensions of the notion "adaptation", and on the constructed nature of (non-fictional) documentaries.
"Adaptation" implies the product, as well as process, of transferring a work of art into a different medium, showing the potential in meaning-making. We will begin by taking a brief look at adaptations focusing on the transformation of text into film/s (Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness), and focus more closely on relevant textbook material, incl. the adaptations of P.D. James's The Children of Men, Kazuo Ishiguro's Never let me go and of Paul Torday's Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
Documentaries can take different formats, which will be shown by example of relevant material from school textbook-DVDs.
We will keep an eye on how to teach such adaptations and documentaries within the framework of EFL curricula and in the classroom. This means we are going to focus on the (in-)adequacy of different methodical frameworks, and discuss possible ways to find appropriate means that help creating learners' awareness of how different media work, with what effects on recipients.
