Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is the current “buzzword” in the realm of bilingual teaching, particularly in Europe. It is an umbrella term that seeks to encompass educational approaches and teaching methods that focus on the acquisition of content knowledge through the medium of an additional (i.e., foreign/second) language. In contrast to conventional additional language courses, which tend to focus on language, and conventional subject courses, which tend to focus on subject-related content, CLIL has a dual-focus: It focuses on both language and content simultaneously and seeks optimal learning outcomes in both of these areas.
As the second element of the supplementary elective module (the so-called individuelle Ergänzungsmodul or IndiErg) “Pedagogical Approaches to Using English in International Professional Contexts,” this course takes a closer look a language learning approaches and methods in a real-world context. In this course we will survey the field of bilingual education and examine CLIL’s role in this field.
Special emphasis will be placed on key aspects and principles of CLIL such as the “four Cs” framework for creating and giving CLIL lessons, the concept of the Language Tryptich, HOTS and LOTS, BICS and CALP, as well as scaffolding. After we have explored these topics, the students will then apply principles of CLIL by designing and presenting their own lesson plans or presentations that are related to their major subjects, either in small groups or individually depending on the course size.
The students are expected to actively participate in class activities and discussions in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Please keep in mind that successful preparation for classroom participation generally entails actually reading the texts, which will be provided either on stud.ip or the course Lernraum on the university’s electronic course catalogue (EKVV). Supplementary reading materials can also be found on the course’s reserved reading shelf in the university library.
