The focus of this class lies on the phonetics and phonology of US-American Englishes and English spoken in Canada and the Caribbean. To investigate the different phonetic and phonological phenomena, we will look at and discuss different methodologies (e.g. dialectological approaches as well as phonetic analyses) and the notion of standard English(es). While regional variation throughout North America is a major aspect of this course, sociolinguistic implications and variation will be equally important as we will also e.g. analyze representations of different North American Englishes in the media (TV, film, literature).
Due to the special circumstances this semester poses, this course will (mostly) be an asynchronous online course via LernraumPlus!
Having completed Introduction to Linguistics I and II is highly recommended!
