The aim of the course is to provide students with a general overview of the basic themes and issues in the field of digital literature/literature in the detail age. Digital media are believed to have many advantages for learning a foreign language but also seem to entail pedagogical challenges. The course will begin by discussing some of the advantages and constraints of using digital media in the classroom. This will be followed by exploring the connections between literary texts, including ‘contemporary literary texts’ such as blog entries, fan-fiction, and WhatsApp messages, and digital media. Some of the questions which will be discussed in more detail will be:
How do we (not) read in the digital age?
How can digital media be used for working with literary texts in foreign language classroom settings?
How can digital media be used to create literary texts and/or responses to literary texts?
The last section of the course will then deal with approaches and methods to reading ad working with both printed and born-digital literature. A glimpse into the not so distant future of virtual reality and artificial intelligence will conclude the course.
All students should get a copy of Matt Hague: The Humans (Canongate Books Ltd. Other, ISBN-13: 978-0857868787) required readings will be made available online.
