As the second part of a two-part course on American childhood, and adopting a cultural studies perspective, "Childhood Narratives in the US" introduces the participants to American childhood(s) over a century and a half, i.e. from the Civil War to the present. In the seminar, we examine the various narratives of childhood through the lens of US literature and culture. We also look at the various ways childhood narratives have shaped and been shaped by the US culture at large, from politics to pedagogy.
Course material includes short stories from juvenile periodicals, child diaries, TV programs, poetry, and novels. The course is reading-intensive and entails extensive in-class activities including pair- and group-work and a research-based exhibition/presentation.
