This course is designed primarily to help students of psychology deal with the very difficult texts they have to read for their major. Using a mix of materials from different sources (academic journals, English textbooks for psychology, Internet texts), students will train a set of reading and lexical strategies, practice their listening and speaking skills on the basis of audio or video materials, and hone their writing skills through Wiki-style text entries on relevant questions as well as through the preparation of a summary or abstract, if desired. Reading strategies include:
• reading strategies for quick reading (skimming scanning)
• identifying the text structure/skeletizing a text
• identify conventional patterns of academic articles
• identifying viewpoints, separating fact from opinion
Lexical strategies include:
• Dealing with unfamiliar words
• Collocation and connotation
• Building up a word bank of relevant terms of art
