This lecture intends to learn robotics approach to understanding the underlying neural mechanisms of cognitive development. Computational models such as artificial neural networks and Bayesian models are introduces to investigate how robots acquire social cognitive abilities such as self-cognition, imitation, joint attention, and altruistic behavior through their sensorimotor experiences. Design of assistance systems for developmental disorders will also be discussed to deepen our understanding of cognitive development.
After the lecture in the morning, participants will work on a hands-on project in the afternoon. The project aims to develop programs for robots to learn cognitive tasks, and participants will choose a topic to work in groups. Results of the project will be presented on the final day of the lecture.
