Since approximately the early 1970s scholars have acknowledged a (re-)emergence of indigenous political campaigning and activism worldwide. While the formation of indigenous organizations and movements has important roots in local or national settings, most notably in the Americas, there also have been important developments at the supranational level, e.g. the United Nations. In this seminar we will compare the historical, political, cultural und social situations of indigenous peoples in selected regional settings, analyze the main international politics and look at differences and common grounds with non-indigenous forms of ethnic claims making.
