In this course, we will examine a range of texts and other media products, including graphic novels and films, produced by South African writers and artists from the before-apartheid era to the present. Encountering a variety of genres and modes — poetry, short stories, novels, non-fiction, visual art, and television — we will investigate the texts in their cultural, linguistic, and historical contexts, exploring how texts both reflect and shape (popular) culture. These texts will then serve as examples of how the ‘new English cultures and literatures’ can be discussed in the contemporary EFL classroom, particularly focussing on developing students’ global citizenship.
All students should get a copy of Meg Vandermerve’s Zebra Crossing (Oneworld Publications). All other required readings and materials will be made available online.
