This seminar observes the field of lexicography from different perspectives.
Our principal questions are: ‘What are words?’, ‘How can they be described?’, ‘What is a dictionary and how can it be compiled?’ ‘What are the aims of dictionaries’? Furthermore, we will delve into the history of lexicography from the beginnings to modern methods of corpus lexicography. There will be ample opportunity to work with different dictionaries and language data.
This class is a basic class, it is recommended to take this class in the same semester as the introduction to linguistics. Both are offered only in the winter term.
A reader with all the required texts will be provided and made available before the start of the term.
