Literature is always mediated - even orally transmitted 'literature' relies on the vocal apparatus of the human body as their medium; other literary forms of expression are also shaped by the conditions of the media in which they are transported. What is more, literary writers have also written for other media than the printed book or the theatre stage. In this seminar, we will discuss such forms of intermediality and analyse the conditions of writing in, and for, the media. We will look in more detail at examples from the history of British media writing in the 20th century, studying a radioplay, a TV-play and a feature film (including their screenplays), and literary hypertexts.
A reader containing all texts will be made available towards the beginning of the semester.
