This course will focus on Gothic as a movement that shaped the U.S.-American literary and artistic canon over several centuries, and which is still influential in contemporary literature and media. By looking at works by Edgar Allan Poe, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison, Sofia Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, etc., we will explore various gothic elements in literature and film, as complex aspects of U.S.-American culture. For a Studienleistung students are expected to do the required amount of reading, take part in group discussions, and turn in several written assignments, thus improving their literary analysis skills. Please note that if you wish to complete module BM2 with this seminar, you will have to pass a written exam at the end of the term. Please note that the first session of this class will take place April 17!
